Who Am I?

I’m a narrative designer and writer, working since 2016 with various projects spanning games, comics and even a film. I tend to be a more “behind the scenes” guy, but have gradually been working towards spec fic novels (mostly fantasy) as a personal project of mine. My goal is to create awesome fictional sci-fi, fantasy and horror entertainment universes. And on occasion, share how the sausage is made on this blog.

Personally speaking, I’m a huge fan of genre, particularly Fantasy and Horror. I’m very interested in the roots and evolution of genre entertainment, from the pulps to paperbacks, to the giant doorstopper epics like Wheel of Time and Sanderson’s Cosmere. In particular I tend to like genre mash-ups, with almost all my work being some sort of remix, whether it’s a post-apocalyptic story with an Elric-inspired protagonist, or a teenage superhero origin with a slasher horror twist.

When I’m not writing, I’m usually cooking, reading or trying to escape the Stygian pits of ELO hell in Overwatch. I also write a series of posts on my blog called Genre Giants, where I give retrospectives on some of my favorite novel and pulp series. I write others dedicated to worldbuilding called the Worldbuilding Series, covering writing craft for SFF creators.

The Barrel Knight is my site’s mascot, a jolly fellow who raises a foaming toast to all my readers. Is it beer? Mead? A sarsaparilla sud? Steaming-hot coffee? Like the secrets of the Tootsie Roll Pop, the world may never know.

He was originally made for a game I started working on in college, that never quite passed development hell. He’s gained a new lease on life as my site-greeter however, and is as cheerful as he’s ever been.
